Why the BSC Is Just as Effective for Small and Medium-Sized Firms
by Mario A. Bognanno, former Vice President, Palladium Group, Inc.,with reporting by Anne Field, Contributing Writer

Overview

Is the Balanced Scorecard just for large organizations? Surely not. Besides the countless documented BSC successes among small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), some 20% of Palladium's BSC Hall of Fame members are SMBs. Still, some SMBs have the impression that the BSC is not for them. The author, who has guided dozens of SMBs in successful scorecard implementations, debunks the most common myths underlying this perception.

In the article, Mr. Bognanno busts the four most frequently held myths surrounding the use of the Balanced Scorecards in small and medium size businesses:

Myth #1:  SMB's do not need strategy: they are transactional organizations
Myth #2:  The Balanced Scorecard is too academic and complex an approach for SMB's
Myth #3:  The Balanced Scorecard costs too much to design and administer
Myth #4:  the Balanced Scorecard involves too much bureaucracy

Relying on his 15 years of client experience, Mr. Bognanno addresses these criticisms of
Balanced Scorecard implementation in Small and Medium Size Businesses.
